A convincing 39-19 victory for Mike Tindall’s Union men at Kingsholm yesterday was watched by an enthusiastic crowd. The first half was played under League rules, but Keith Senior’s League stars were knocked back in the early exchanges as the Union team refused to be dominated. Despite the urging of Wayne Godwin at the rucks and Keith Senior’s off loading in the midfield, the League side struggled to find enough momentum. Ryan Lamb’s range of passing gave the Union side some cutting edge, and they continued the pressure into the second half, when Lamb was able to release the rampaging Jordan Crane out wide off quick ruck ball. The League stars tried hard to get back into the game, with ‘Wagga’ Godwin always a handful at scrum half, but in truth the game was won at half time.

Rugby For Heroes is immensely appreciative of all the hard work that went into the staging of the event. Thanks to all at Kingsholm, to all the supporters and officials and those who supported the Saturday night dinner. Thanks also to the two U18 sides that provided us with such a good curtain raiser. All this commitment was matched by the players from Union and League, who gave us a game full of skill and power.

It was a reminder that we were watching one sport, not two. A set of rules defines us, but does not divide us. “There she goes”, as the League prophet says…
