On May 8, Rugby for Heroes hosted a simulated clay shoot at Bangrove Farm in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. The event coincided with the 80th anniversary of VE Day and brought together former professional rugby players and supporters for a day of sport and fundraising for our ex-servicemen and women transitioning into civilian life.
Rugby for Heroes was proud to mark this milestone anniversary of Victory in Europe Day with a day dedicated to supporting those who have served. The charity exists to support military personnel in their transition to civilian careers, and commemorating VE Day in this way provided a meaningful reminder of the legacy and continuing needs of our veteran community.
The day commenced in the morning with arrivals, refreshments, and a safety briefing. Participants then proceeded to complete four simulated drives across the grounds. Our celebrity rugby team featured Patron Mike Tindall MBE, former England international and Rugby World Cup winner, alongside sporting stars Nicky Robinson (former Wales fly-half), Kevin Yates (former England prop), Charlie Sharples (former England and Gloucester wing), and Mark Atkinson (England international and Gloucester centre).
Also in attendance was Jamie Hartles, Managing Director of Howard Tenens, a longstanding sponsor and supporter of Rugby for Heroes. Jamie joined participants on-site to show support and his continued efforts to support our military personnel post-service, notably hosting our last Beyond the Uniform Veterans and Business networking event at their HQ in Swindon.
Reflecting on the structure of the event, participant and owner of Clavell & Hind, Pete Cassidy, noted that “it was a well-organised day,” adding that “the format allowed everyone to participate and support the charity in a practical way.”
Following the shoot, all participants gathered at Clavell & Hind Brewery. A Q&A session commenced, featuring Mike Tindall MBE, Kevin Yates, Charlie Sharples, Nicky Robinson, and Mark Atkinson. Here, they anticipated the announcement of the British & Irish Lions squad for the 2025 tour to Australia. The squad, unveiled at the O2 Arena in London, comprises 38 players, including 15 from Ireland, 13 from England, 8 from Scotland, and 2 from Wales, whilst our guest panellists shared their perspectives on the squad selection and the upcoming tour.
Notable selections include Maro Itoje, named as captain, and 20-year-old flanker Henry Pollock, who made his Test debut for England in March.
Kevin Yates, an ambassador for the charity, commented during the session, “It’s good to see events like this being used to raise funds. Everyone was able to get involved and contribute.”
The event concluded with a prize presentation for top shooters and a charity auction, with proceeds directed to our initiative and mission.
Trustee, Karen Kraus offered closing remarks, stating, “Thank you to all attendees, participants, and supporters who made it a fun and memorable day. It was a fantastic event, and we already have our sights set on making it bigger and better next year.”
We will be hosting another Clay Shoot early next year, so please join our mailing list for more information on our upcoming fundraising events.
