On Thursday, 17th October 2024, Rugby for Heroes hosted an extraordinary Fundraiser Dinner & Auction at the iconic Roman Baths & Pump Rooms. The evening was a gathering of purpose, community, and generosity, as we welcomed Patron Mike Tindall, Ambassador Amy Williams MBE, and guests from the worlds of business and sport, including England & Bath rugby stars Ollie Lawrence and Ben Spencer and rugby legend Lee Mears. Together, everyone rallied to raise crucial support for veterans transitioning to civilian life.
The event featured outstanding entertainment, beginning with a moving performance by the Chivenor Military Ladies Choir, which set a beautiful tone as guests arrived, drinks in hand, against the stunning backdrop of the Roman Baths. This was followed by a three-course meal, where guests and charity officials had the chance to mingle with veterans who have benefited from our Transition Through Rugby course, making the evening even more impactful.
World-renowned violinist Yury Revich then captivated the audience with his extraordinary talent, followed by a lively Q&A session with Patron Mike Tindall MBE. Mike shared inspiring insights into the importance of supporting veterans during their transition to civilian life:
“Having spent most of my career in the military in preseasons, we formed quite a bond with the military. When you come out, you can feel lost. What Rugby for Heroes is trying to do is bridge that gap and show that rugby is another place you can go, another family you can find when you leave the military.”
Among the distinguished guests was Loraine Morgan-Brinkhurst MBE, the Former Mayor of Bath and founder and presenter of Radio Bath, who expressed her pride in the city and her admiration for the charity:
“I’m extremely proud of the Roman Baths, the Pump Rooms, and all the history and heritage the city holds. Last year I met Alan Lamb, the founder of Rugby for Heroes, and I just thought, what an amazing charity. The work they do to support ex-military men and women is incredible, and obviously, quite a lot of ex-Bath and England rugby players are involved in supporting them.”
Trustee Simon Bailey then led a thrilling auction that raised essential funds for our mission.
Our main sponsor, The Watches of Bath, generously donated a luxury timepiece to support the cause. James Mercer of The Watches of Bath reflected on their involvement:
“I come from a family of military… My dad was in Holland and Belgium post-World War II, and my cousin used to be the Veterans Minister. Growing up in Bath and with the military background in my family, it was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up, and I’m really proud to support this cause. These veterans often haven’t had what we would call a ‘normal’ job—they’ve never written a CV, gone through a job interview, or worked in the civilian world. Supporting them in that transition is incredibly important.”
The evening’s guest list included notable figures and businesses, including friends and representatives from Howard Tenens Logistics, Mitchel & Co., Aura Care Living, Bath Building Society, and Freeman Wealth Management. Particularly moving were the personal stories shared by veterans who have directly benefited from our programs, adding a heartfelt and inspiring touch to the evening.
A huge thank you also goes out to all our other sponsors, including Bath Clinic, Cotswold Mortgage Advice Centre, The Sepoy Club, and Radio Bath. Their invaluable support allows us to continue our vital work.
As we welcome our next group of course attendees this week, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who attended and contributed to making the night a success. Your generosity is helping create lasting change for veterans as they navigate their journeys into civilian life.
Your continued support helps us transform the lives of veterans and ensure they receive the help and opportunities they deserve.
